IS CURLING A NEW SPORT IN GRAND FORKS?
No. Curling has been present in Grand Forks for at least 100 years. The Grand Forks Curling Club as we know it today was founded in 1960.
CAN ANYONE BECOME A MEMBER?
Yes. No matter your age, gender, or physical ability-- if you have a desire to play a winter sport and be on a team, then curling is the sport for you!
WHO ARE THE GRAND FORKS SCOTTIES?
The Scotties is the name of our women's group. They have been organized since 1955 and their annual bonspiel is well known in the region. They have their own league on Tuesday nights.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO CURL?
Basic equipment includes a broom, a slider, and warm, comfortable clothing. The club has brooms and sliders available to use free of charge. Advanced equipment includes a stopwatch, curling shoes, gloves, and perhaps some advanced instructional materials.
WHAT KINDS OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH DOES THE GFCC DO?
The curling club has always been a resource for the Greater Grand Forks community. We invite school groups to come out and curl for gym class. Our events bring in both community members and visitors to the region. Though our club is run by volunteers, we make every effort to accommodate interested parties and share in our love of curling.
CAN MY GROUP RENT THE CLUB FOR OUR PARTY?
Since we are a member volunteer run organization, we don't have regular staff that can host club rentals. If one of your group is a curling club member, they can host your event. Have them email the club.
WHEN CAN I CURL?
Our season lasts from November to early April. We begin putting in ice in mid-October. Our open house usually begins the last week of October. League nights run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
IS CURLING ICE DIFFERENT THAN HOCKEY ICE?
Yes. Curling ice is not smooth. It has a pebbled bumpy surface that allows the rock to curl. Watch this video to see how its made.
